We were born thirsty.

Thirsty for water, true.

But also thirsty for intimacy, purpose, and significance.

Sometimes we try to satisfy that thirst with things that promise to deliver but turn out to be mirages — success, beauty, power, control, and relationships may seem like a good source of “water” for our thirsty souls, but one day we wake up and wonder why we feel so empty. Work, drugs, alcohol, sex, food, and even exercise may promise immediate relief from loneliness, anxiety, or despair.  But we suddenly find ourselves in bondage to the very things that promised to make us feel alive and free.

The Bible uses a metaphor to describe this experience — broken cisterns.  God wants to provide us clean, flowing water that will really satisfy, but we turn away from His offer. Instead we build our own water tanks. We end up collecting run-off and mud to drink. God says our water tanks are always faulty. They leak, and the water we try to store up is stale and murky.
